Gathering of God’s People

Welcome

The Christ Candle is Lit

As I light the Christ candle, I invite you to also light a candle, if you have one. It reminds us of the presence and the love of Christ that surrounds us. We are not alone.

Land Acknowledgement

We acknowledge these lands upon which we worship, as the ancestral, traditional and unceded lands of the Syilx (Say-elks) / Okanagan First Nations. Together with Indigenous peoples we desire a different relationship based on respect and right relations.

Coming Into God’s Presence

Call to Worship
One: Creator, parent of the human family,
All:  we gather to worship you.
One: In baptism, we are called beloved children of God, as such,
All:  we gather to worship you.
One: Friends, neighbours, siblings in faith,
All:  we gather to worship in song, in prayer, in readings from your story, from our story, in thoughts and reflections. Let us worship God.
Jackie Harper, Gathering

Hymn VU 644 I Was There to Hear Your Borning Cry
I was there to hear your borning cry, I’ll be
there when you are old.  I rejoiced the day you
were baptized, to see your life unfold.

I was there when you were but a child,
with a faith to suit you well,
in a blaze of light you wandered off
to find where demons dwell.

When you heard the wonder of the word, I was
there to cheer you on, you were raised to praise the
living Lord, to whom you now belong.

If you find someone to share your time
and you join your hearts as one,
I’ll be there to make your verses rhyme
From dusk till rising sun.

In the middle ages of your life, not too
old, no longer young. I’ll be there to guide you
through the night, complete what I’ve begun

When the evening gently closes in
and you shut your weary eyes,
I’ll be there as I have always been
with just one more surprise.

 Gathering Prayer
One: God, creator of us all, we gather to worship you.
All:  We come as individuals, we come in family units, we come as neighbours and friends.
One: We come here where we are known by name, welcomed with all our fragilities and
strengths.
All:  We gather with kindred spirits who long to live faithful to your calling.
One: Guide us, inspire us, challenge us, comfort us, and nurture us in this time of worship so that we might be enabled to return to our daily lives ready to engage fully with all of your creation. We pray. Amen.

 Listening for God’s Word

Reading: A Reading from Embers by Richard Wagamese
From our very first breath, we are in
relationship. With that indrawn draft of air, we
become joined to everything that ever was, is
and ever will be. When we exhale, we forge that
relationship by virtue of the act of living. Our
breath commingles with all breath, and we are
a part of everything. That’s the simple fact of
things. We are born into a state of relationship,
and our ceremonies and rituals are guides to lead
us deeper into that relationship with all things.
Big lesson? Relationships never end; they just
change. In believing that lies the freedom to carry
compassion, empathy, love, kindness and respect
into and through whatever changes. We are made
more by that practice.

Response: MV7 Gather Us In
Gather us in, ground us in you.
Gather us in, ground us in you.
Gather us in, gather us in.
Ground us, ground us, in you.

 Scripture: John 17:20-24
20 “I ask not only on behalf of these, but also on behalf of those who will believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us,[a] so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 The glory that you have given me I have given them, so that they may be one, as we are one, 23 I in them and you in me, that they may become completely one, so that the world may know that you have sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. 24 Father, I desire that those also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory, which you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world.

 Reflection

 Time of Silent Reflection

 Responding to God’s Love

Music: MV1 Let Us Build a House

Let us build a house where love can dwell and

all can safely live, a place where saints and

children tell how hearts learn to forgive.  Built of

hopes and dreams and visions, rock and faith and vault of

grace; here the love of Christ shall end divisions:

All are welcome, all are welcome,

all are welcome in this place.

Let us build a house where prophets speak, and

words are strong and true, where all God’s children

dare to seek to dream God’s reign anew.  Here the

cross shall stand as witness and as symbol of God’s

grace; here as one we claim the faith of Jesus;

All are welcome, all are welcome,

all are welcome in this place.

Let us build a house where love is found in

water, wine and wheat; a banquet hall on

holy ground, where peace and justice meet.

Here the love of God, through Jesus, is revealed in time and

space; as we share in Christ the feast that frees us:

All are welcome, all are welcome,

all are welcome in this place.

Let us build a house where hands will reach beyond

the wood and stone to heal and strength,

holy ground, where peace and justice meet.  Here the

outcast and the stranger bear the image of God’s

face; let us bring an end to fear and danger:

All are welcome, all are welcome,

all are welcome in this place.

Let us build a house where all are named, their

songs and voices heard and loved and treasured,

taught and claimed as words within the Word.

Built of tears and cries and laughter,

prayers of faith and songs of grace;

let this house proclaim from floor to rafter:

All are welcome, all are welcome,

all are welcome in this place.

Offering
Let us Pray…
Creator God, you have blessed our lives with relationships that both inspire and challenge.
We offer these gifts so that we might continue to build relationships
with one another and with your whole creation.
Bless these gifts that they may bring wholeness and life abundance to all your people.
We pray. Amen.
Jackie Harper

Prayers of the People (Fern Gibbard)

Now let’s join together in saying the Lord’s Prayer.

Lord’s Prayer (VU 916)
Eternal Spirit,
Earth-maker, Pain-bearer, Life-giver,
Source of all that is and that shall be.
Father and Mother of us all,
Loving God, in whom is heaven:

The hallowing of your name echo
through the universe!
The way of your justice be followed
by peoples of the world!
Your heavenly will be done
by all created beings!
Your commonwealth of peace and freedom
sustain our hope and come on earth.

With the bread we need for today, feed us.
In the hurts we absorb from one another, forgive us.
In times of temptation and test, strengthen us.
From trials too great to endure, spare us.
From the grip of all that is evil, free us.

For you reign in the glory of the power that is love,
now and for ever. Amen.
